What is the worst thing that you could do in a debt crisis?
Other than continuing to spend and racking up thousands of more credit card debts, the most damaging thing you could do when you find yourself in a debt crisis is to ignore the problem. It's hard to believe though, that this is how so many people with debt management problems react in this situation. Call it what you like- running away, burying your head in the sand, avoiding the issue – but denial of the debt is not the way to solve it.
What happens if you ignore debt?
It's very simple – ignoring debt will always get you into more debt and the situation can very quickly spiral out of control. Here's roughly what could happen if you refuse to face facts and get debt advice at the first signs of trouble:
- Your creditors will contact you via email, phone, letters etc
- These communications can go from a demand for payment to the threat of a lawsuit very quickly
- You may then be contacted by a debt collection agency
- You could lose the money in your bank accounts, as lenders may access this to pay your other outstanding debts to them
- You could be forced to file for bankruptcy
What happens if you face up to debt?
Realising that you have a debt problem is the first important step to recovery, and seeking advice for it is the second. It is possible to make arrangements with your creditors to extend your contract or change your payment plan, but only if you are honest with them about the problem.
Alternatively, there are a number of debt solutions available (including debt management plans, debt consolidation loans, IVAs and other solutions). There is a lot of help out there for people with debt problems – all you have to do is ask. Whatever you do though, don't bury your head in the sand!
