Saving money in the kitchen: top tips

There are a whole host of ways you can save money around the house, mainly involving cutting down on waste and using less energy. Of all the rooms in the house, the kitchen is the one where the most electricity and water is used because of all the power-draining appliances it is home to. However, the kitchen is also where the most money-saving opportunities can be found.

Read on for some top tips on how to use less energy, save money and avoid future debt problems, all in your very own kitchen…

Make your fridge/freezer more energy efficient

This doesn't involve splashing out a fortune on an expensive new \”green" or \”super-efficient" fridge; it simply means that you should make a few changes to how you use your fridge or freezer. Start by never leaving the door open, defrosting regularly, never placing warm food in the fridge, and keeping the appliance at least three quarters full. One more thing; remember to clean your fridge regularly ‚Äö√Ñ√¨ especially the condenser coils at the very back ‚Äö√Ñ√¨ as dust can reduce its efficiency by around 25 per cent.

Cut energy usage when cleaning up

When using the washing machine or the dishwasher, ensure you always put in a full load to make the cycle more energy-efficient. Use the ‘eco' setting if your appliance offers it, or wash clothes at a lower temperature than you would normally – as this requires less energy to heat the water.

Use your kettle more efficiently

There are three ways to make boiling water in the kettle more energy-efficient:

1.       Only boil as much water as you need

2.       De-scale the kettle regularly, as scale build-up makes the kettle work harder to boil the water

3.       Use the kettle to boil water for cooking – rather than heating in a pan on the hob – as it's quicker and can save you money on energy bills

Food

There's also a hundred or more ways to save money on the stuff usually stored in your kitchen…food. A couple though include making larger batches of food and storing the leftovers in the fridge/freezer for the next day, shopping for non-branded goods instead of expensive names, buying in bulk (if you have room for storage) and also taking your own food to work to save on buying expensive lunches.
