No one ever said that raising children was cheap, but some parents these days are finding it incredibly difficult to keep up with childcare costs whilst holding down a job.
If you have debt problems that you’re trying to work your way out of, the costs of childcare can be a real problem. But finding a responsible care provider for your children whilst you’re out at work is absolutely essential, so what can you do?
To solve this dilemma, you need to find ways to save money on childcare. Luckily, there is help available, such as:
Child Tax Credits (the Childcare Element of Working Tax Credit)
You may be eligible for tax credits if you meet the following criteria:
- You are a single parent working 16 hours or more a week
- You are in a couple both working 16 hours or more a week
- Your household income is under £40,000
Your particular circumstances will affect your entitlement, but it’s worth checking it out if you meet any of the above criteria.
Childcare vouchers
Many companies offer these vouchers to employees, but they unfortunately will interfere with your child tax credit entitlement. Childcare vouchers are useful, however, if you aren’t entitled to child tax credits for any reason.
Free early learning classes for 3-4 year olds
Most local authorities in England offer free early learning classes for 3 to 4 year olds for at least 38 weeks a year (12.5 hours a week).
Free activities and classes for the summer holidays
For older children, it’s always worth checking what free activities and classes your local schools and sports centres are offering. Some even provide day-long activities so you don’t have to take time off work!

Great, I never knew this, thanks.
